京都

About 140 minutes from Tokyo on the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train, Kyoto is the quintessentially Japanese tourist destination. In a 2014 magazine ranking of the world's best cities, Kyoto took first place. With its gently flowing rivers, abundant flowers, and the autumn color of its ginkgo and other trees, the city offers picturesque scenes with a seasonal flavor. The many noted shrines, temples, and other historic sites include Shimogamo-jinja Shrine, one of Kyoto's oldest shrines, and Kifune-jinja Shrine, a spiritual place in the northern part of the city, as well as the Hoo-do (Phoenix Hall) at Byodo-in Temple and Ujigami-jinja Shrine, both of which are World Heritage sites.

Prosperous since olden times as a hub for land and water transport, Otsu is a place where nature is in harmony with human settlement and history. Situated on Japan's largest lake, Lake Biwa, the city's famous historic attractions include the World Cultural Heritage site formed by Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei. Mii-dera Temple, meanwhile, is the 14th temple in the Saigoku Sanjusansho Pilgrimage (a pilgrimage of 33 Buddhist temples throughout the Kansai region of Japan) and houses a number of national treasures and important cultural assets.
