Kyushu is the southernmost of Japan's four main islands. The prefecture of Miyazaki can be reached in about 120 minutes' flying time from Tokyo's Haneda Airport. Nango, in the south of the prefecture, boasts attractive coastal scenery and natural landscapes, while its atmospheric townscapes give a sense of history.

Nango is also famous as the venue for the training camp of the professional baseball team Saitama Seibu Lions. Nearby attractions include the Udo Jingu Shrine, whose brilliant red-painted structures are sheltered within a natural cave facing the Sea of Hyuga. Also within easy reach are Cape Toi, home to a herd of around 90 wild horses, and SUNMESSE Nichinan, a theme park that celebrates sunshine and the South Seas.
